Why Does The Skin Need Different Care In Winter?

Why should you care for your skin differently in winter than usual?

Quite simply: In the winter months, the skin loses moisture due to heating air and constant cold. When the outside temperatures are cold, we humans tend to heat more and thus increase the room temperature. These temperature differences and the increasingly dry air can leave their mark on the skin. Possible consequences are blemishes or very dry skin. In the cold months, the skin’s barrier function is permanently restricted.

Why Does The Skin Need Different Care In Winter?

It is not only dry warm air that causes stressed skin in winter, but also cold ones. Because this is even drier than warm, because it stores less moisture. Added to this is the reduced blood flow to the skin in icy temperatures. Due to the cold, blood vessels constrict as they try to retain their internal heat. This results in decreased blood flow, which obstructs the proper flow of nutrients and oxygen. More moisture is lost as a result of the skin’s protective barrier being weakened by the low metabolic activity.

At temperatures below 8° the sebaceous glands go on general strike. As a result, they crop little or no lipids at all and thus damage the skin’s natural and protective oil film. Without this greasy film, the water from the skin’s surface evaporates even more quickly, leading to an additional lack of moisture. In addition, the temperature causes the lipids to spread more poorly on the skin’s surface, which also impairs the skin’s barrier function.

Skin Care In Winter – Dos And Don’ts

  • Don’t bathe or shower too often or too hot.
  • Use lukewarm water when washing your face.
  • Only clean your hair and skin with mild shampoos and blow-dry your hair only lukewarm.
  • Cream hands regularly.
  • Don’t forget lip protection and a sunscreen product with a sun protection factor.
  • Use moisturizing face and body creams.

The Right Lip Care

The Human lips are the most subtle part of the body, because the skin of the lips is 70 % thinner than the skin of the rest of the body. Especially in winter, you cannot defy the cold temperatures with a protective film of fat and water, but you dry out and become brittle. In addition, our lips have little UV protection. That’s why you get even more stressed out in the cold and too much sun than in everyday life.

Therefore, use good lip care in winter – e.g. B. Eucerin Acute Lip Balm or Eucerin Lip Active.

In addition, there are other factors to look out for:

  • Avoid biting your lips
  • Don’t wet your lips with your tongue
  • Don’t use lipstick every day
  • Follow these 3 simple tips and give your lips the skincare they need this winter.
